Many around the NFL are still shocked that Eric Bieniemy doesn’t have an NFL head coaching job yet. The former NFL running back has quite the resume as an offensive coach.

The Colorado Buffaloes star during their 1990s heyday was hired as the Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator in 2018. Of course, that offense has been clicking ever since with Patrick Mahomes at the helm. They’ve been a top-five unit every year since, playing in three Super Bowls and winning two.

Of course, a lot of that credit has to be shared between Eric Bieniemy, Mahomes, and head coach Andy Reid, who is one of the biggest offensive geniuses the league has ever seen. But, basically anyone else would have been hired for a head coaching job by now. Not Bieniemy, though.

Part of the reason is that he was in the shadows of Reid and Mahomes, so it made sense for all sides to split up after they won the Super Bowl back in February over the Philadelphia Eagles. He was hired by the Washington Commanders to be their offensive coordinator and try to mentor second-year quarterback Sam Howell into a star.

Recently, Eric Bieniemy spoke out on the decision to change jobs. Here’s more courtesy of ESPN.

“I’m fired up and excited. It’s given me a whole new outlook,” Bieniemy said. “When you’ve been in a place for 10 years, you have a tendency to take certain things for granted. This has helped me to go back and dot all the I’s and cross all the T’s.”

The Commanders offense is interesting. It has some pretty enticing weapons like running backs Brian Robinson Jr., and Antonio Gibson, and wide receivers Jahan Dotson and Terry McLaurin. If Eric Bieniemy can get Sam Howell to play well, the Commanders could be in business.
