The next time you turn on the TV to watch ESPN, the broadcast may look a good bit different from what you remember after the network experienced a massive round of layoffs on Tuesday that included several big-name television personalities.

Perhaps the biggest name caught in the crosshairs was former NFL veteran turned polarizing TV analyst Ryan Clark. But the network also parted ways with stars such as Cam Newton, Tom Pelissero, and longtime MLB play-by-play announcer and host Karl Ravech, who learned of his fate through social media.

The biggest question on a number of viewers’ minds was why, at a time when ESPN is pulling in record revenues, is the company parting ways with several of its most recognizable talents.

Now we know why.

ESPN Exec Jimmy Pitaro Says NFL Network Acquisition Is Behind Latest Layoffs

Thanks to a report from Michael McCarthy and Ryan Glasspiegel of Front Office Sports, we now know that ESPN’s layoffs are the product of its recent acquisition of the NFL Network.

At least, that’s what an internal memo from ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro told remaining employees.

“Over the past several months, we’ve made significant progress integrating the NFL assets that we acquired into ESPN,” the memo begins. “Throughout this process, we have taken the time to carefully evaluate our collective teams, resources and organizational structure to best position us for the future. As a result, we had to make some difficult decisions about job impacts that we will be communicating today.

“While most of the job impacts are tied to the acquisition, we will also notify colleagues in other parts of the company today that their positions have been impacted. We are committed to treating employees with compassion and respect and to providing support as they navigate this transition.

“Even in moments like these, the strength of ESPN comes from our people, our teamwork and our shared mission to serve sports fans.”

Perhaps the most interesting element of the layoffs is that people like Pelissero and analyst Charles Davis were highly important to the success of the NFL Network.

Maybe Pitaro and company feel that they become redundant with some of the talent already at ESPN. But it’s then hard to see how that should affect someone like Ravech, who spent more than 30 years with the company.

Either way, it feels as if ESPN may have bitten off more than it can chew with the network acquisition, and now it has lost valuable loyalty from longtime fans.
