Red Sox Fans Outraged After Spotting Yankees Gear For Sale At Team Store Across From Fenway Park

The Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees are responsible for one of the fiercest rivalries in all of sports. Fans should not expect a warm welcome when they head into enemy territory, and plenty of people who cheer for the guys who play at Fenway Park were understandably horrified to see gear emblazoned with the Bronx Bombers’ logo for sale at the official team store next to that historic venue.

The Red Sox and the Yankees faced off for the first time in 1903 when the latter were still known as the “Highlanders,” and games tend to be tilted in the former’s favor until the momentum shifted in dramatic fashion after Boston traded Babe Ruth to New York in 1918.

That transaction was responsible for the “Curse of the Bambino” and marked the start of an era where the Yankees won the World Series 26 times while the Red Sox dealt with a drought that was ultimately snapped after 86 years.

The rivalry arguably reached its peak in 2004, as Boston staged a historic rally after falling into a 3-0 hole in the ALCS. That came after the Yankees had dashed their hopes of playing for a title thanks to the walk-off home run Aaron Boone hit in Game 7 of the same round the previous year, and their victory over the Cardinals in the World Series unleashed a multigenerational catharsis over New England that exorcised demons stretching back to World War I.

That championship also tempered the rivalry to some degree, but there’s still no love lost between the teams and their fans, including the ones who are not happy about a recent development at the team store across from Fenway Park.

The official Red Sox team store made the baffling decision to sell Yankees gear

Red Sox fans who make the pilgrimage to Fenway Park can stop by the official team store at 19 Jersey Street (formerly Yawkey Way), which has spent decades peddling a wide array of memorabilia devoted to the team that plays across the road.

The store in question was opened up by the twin brothers who founded the brand that is now known as ’47 (a nod to the year they first started selling merchandise outside the stadium), and when you consider Red Sox fans are the target demographic, you might think it would try to avoid attracting their ire.

However, it seems like capitalism has triumphed over common sense during the team’s ongoing series with the Yankees, as multiple fans snapped pictures of some borderline nauseating displays filled with gear designed for the team that hails from the Bronx (including one featuring home plates celebrating their 27 World Series titles).

Some of the merch is standalone Yankees gear, but there are also some other options celebrating the rivalry that are just as baffling, as no self-respecting fan of either team would wear (never mind spend money on) any kind of apparel with the other squad’s logo.

You hate to see it.
