Flau’jae Johnson and Angel Reese once formed one of the most dynamic duos in all of women’s college basketball during their time together at LSU. These days, however, the pair has grown apart. In a new interview with “The Breakfast Club,” Johnson opened up on what drove them apart and where they are now.
News of the rift first surfaced last year when Reese noted that they were not as close now as they were previously. But she didn’t go into details about what led to the falling out.
“I still support Flau’jae. We aren’t as close as we used to be,” Reese said.. “And there’s no hard feelings or anything, but we aren’t as close as we used to be. That’s why people always expect us to still be posting each other and stuff like that. But, like, we aren’t as close.
“It happens. You don’t have the best relationships with everybody and don’t always continue relationships with people. So I wish her the best always, and I’m always gonna support her… but yeah, there’s no love lost. But we aren’t as close as we used to be.”
Now, Johnson has gone a little more in-depth to explain why they’re no longer good friends and what caused some of the drama.
“We’re not friends, but I mean that bond that we had, that thing that we did together, winning a national championship, you can never take that away from us,” she said. “And so sometimes stuff happens, you wish it don’t happen but it do. And you just gotta grow.”
When asked specifically what happened that drove them apart, Johnson danced around the question a bit but ultimately said “Yeah, it was a lot of media, it was a lot of locker room stuff. You know what I’m saying? Stuff that go on behind the scenes. But it happens. It happens … Sometimes stuff happens. You wish it don’t happen, but it do.”
Both keep saying they wish the best for one another. But it doesn’t sound like they’ll be exchanging Christmas cards anytime soon. Meanwhile, Reese is focused on honing her game in the WNBA while Johnson prepares for her senior season at LSU.
