Miami-Dade County Sheriff’s Deputy Luis Hernandez doesn’t plan on quitting his day job anytime soon.
Two weeks ago, Hernandez earned himself a UFC contract on Dana White’s Contender Series.
On Saturday, Hernandez won his UFC debut against veteran Sedriques Dumas on just two days’ notice.

Despite being a UFC fighter now, Hernandez told Ariel Helwani that he keeps working in law enforcement full-time.
“I am very blessed. We get to actually train on duty. We get an hour every day to train. And then the other time I use, I use my PTO time/vacation and comp time to train as well. And I’m very blessed to, you know, use the time and make up— you’re able to use it and make it. So I stay extra hours on shift. To build it, and I have a great schedule where I could train and train multiple times a day.”
“If Stipe Miocic did it, right, a firefighter, it’s time for an officer to do it, a deputy now.”
“I’m starting my career and, I’m gonna take it one day at a time. But I definitely have a lot of vacation time that I can use. And, uh, when it gets there, and, and I’ll start burning it and I’ll figure it out. And if there’s a will, there’s a way. And if I stay active how I am now, I’ll figure it out. But let’s see how many fights I get a year.”
