Florida State football celebrated Jordan Travis’ fifth-place finish in Heisman Trophy voting on Saturday. There is a lot of irony in its salute to the sixth-year senior college football quarterback!

Travis, who had a phenomenal year for the Seminoles before breaking his leg, received eight first-place votes, 19 second-place votes and 23 third-place votes. He finished pretty far behind Jayden Daniels, Michael Penix Jr., Bo Nix and Marvin Harrison Jr., but ahead of Jalen Milroe, Ollie Gordon II, Cody Schrader, Blake Corum and J.J. McCarthy.

If Travis was able to finish the season, there might have been an opportunity to win the award. However, because of the injury, he finished fifth. In addition, because of the injury, Florida State was left out of the College Football Playoff despite an undefeated record.

Travis’ team ranked fifth in the final CFP standings. He finished fifth in the Heisman voting.

The Seminoles were furious about the former. Head coach Mike Norvell, his players, and everyone involved with the program could not believe that they were snubbed. A lot of fans agreed with their anger.

On the flip side, they were very proud of Travis’ fifth-place finish.

Obviously, the two scenarios are very different. The Heisman Trophy and the College Football Playoff are largely incomparable. For Jordan Travis to finish fifth is very different than Florida State’s fifth-place finish.

With that being said — the irony is rich.

The Seminoles were up in arms and ready to riot over fifth place less than seven days prior to their celebration of fifth place on Saturday. It is only worth celebrating when applicable, not always.

There is only room to celebrate fifth place if it is a scenario in which that fifth place finish is unexpected. There is no room to celebrate fifth place if it is a scenario in which that fifth place finish is disappointing.

The script has flipped!
