Gordon Hayward Fighting Back Tears Describing Seeing His Mother Crying After His Injury Is Moving

YouTube

After writing an articulate, honest and in-depth recollection of his gruesome injury he suffered in the first few minutes of his Celtics debut, Gordon Hayward sat down The Today Show’s Matt Lauer to speak about his injury and the physical and emotional pain that comes with it. My takeaway from the interview is that the 27-year-old All-Star is just a solid dude, through and through.

A particular segment of the interview that demonstrates Hayward’s character is when he recalled seeing his mom crying in the crowd crying. Fighting back tears, Hayward reveals that as a parent to two young children himself, you never want your children to go through that. The most emotional part of the interview wasn’t Hayward describing how his long-anticipated debut in Boston was shattered, at least for the foreseeable future, but how much it hurt him to see his parents affected. Moving stuff, check it out below.

Matt’s love of writing was born during a sixth grade assembly when it was announced that his essay titled “Why Drugs Are Bad” had taken first prize in D.A.R.E.’s grade-wide contest. The anti-drug people gave him a $50 savings bond for his brave contribution to crime-fighting, and upon the bond’s maturity 10 years later, he used it to buy his very first bag of marijuana.
