The Houston Cougars will kick off their 2023 season on Saturday with a matchup against UTSA. The program is competing in its first ever campaign as a Big XII members, and they’ll make an immediate statement in the opener.

The team will reportedly wear tribute uniforms to commemorate the Houston Oilers. College football fans are absolutely blown away by the NFL-themed outfits.

The Houston Oilers came into the NFL following the 1970 merger with the AFL. The franchise competed on the field every year after up until 1996.

Since, the team has moved onto Tennessee, now known as the Titans, though the city of Houston still boasts an NFL organization in the Texans. One of the more recognizable brands in the sport, the Oilers fielded Hall of Famers like Earl Campbell, Bruce Matthews, and Warren Moon.

They also sported some of the slickest uniforms in the league.

The powder blue jerseys with red and white lettering are still highly sought after by fans around the NFL, and the current Tennessee Titans getups don’t hold a candle to the uniforms of the past.

As tribute to both the team and the city, the Houston Cougars unveiled an awesome take on those Oilers uniforms this week, which fans can see this Saturday.

College football fans reacted to the jersey release with overwhelming approval. Viewers can’t wait to see the players wear them on the field.

“They nailed this,” one follower wrote.

“These are so fresh,” said another.

Maybe we’ll start seeing these in subsequent seasons when hosting big-time opponents.

It’s not the only reboot we’ll see of these awesome jerseys this football season. The Titans announced that they, too, will wear an Oilers’ throwback uniform in their 2023 campaign.

Houston plans to make a massive statement in its first season in the Power Five. They’ll certainly look the part when they come out of the tunnel.
