The Houston Texans have had one of the most odd head coaching situations of this NFL offseason. First, they surprised many by firing David Culley after his first season as head coach in spite of being rather successful by the standards of what the Houston Texans gave him to work with.

Then reports surfaced that not only did they have a candidate in mind to replace Culley, but that they wanted another team to interview that candidate to justify their interest in him. That candidate is Josh McCown, a long-time journeyman quarterback in the NFL who has no coaching experience. It seems somehow perfect for the Texans.

The Texans have also been linked to Brian Flores, but nobody knows how his lawsuit, which mentions the Texans’ firing of Culley, will impact his candidacy. Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator, Jonathan Gannon has been another candidate reported to draw interest from the Texans.

Now, Josina Anderson is reporting that the Texans have narrowed their search down to 2 finalists.

With how heavily linked the Texans have been to McCown this offseason, it seems pretty likely that he’s one of those finalists. However, there is no indication which of the other two candidates is his remaining challenger.

Based off of everything we’ve seen from the Texans in recent seasons, it feels like just a matter of time before the Texans go ahead and pick McCown and are met with ridicule from the rest of the football world.
