Now, it’s time to seek the same when it comes to against the spread bets, specifically regarding the favorites over the years when it comes to Super Bowl betting.

Super Bowl Betting: What History Shows Us About The Favorites

If you’re a sports bettor you’ve probably noticed that Vegas is pretty good at picking favorites and setting spreads, therefore, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that favorites have won more Super Bowls than underdogs. What is a bit surprising is just how good favorites have faired against the spread in games they’ve won over the years.

Of the 55 Super Bowls played, 54 of them have had a spread with the 2015 Super Bowl between the Patriots and Seahawks being the only one in history to be played as a pick ’em.

Of the 54 Super Bowls with a spread, the favorite has won 34 of them (62.9%). The more eye-catching number is that of the 34 times the favorite has won the game, they’ve also covered the spread in 27 of those games. This means that when the favorite wins the Super Bowl they’ve covered the spread 79% of the time over the years. Having favorites win plus cover more than three-fourths of the time is a huge, huge number.

There isn’t great value in solely betting the favorite to win the Super Bowl. However, these numbers clearly show that if history tells us anything, bettors who like the favorite should have confidence in betting the team to cover the spread as well.
