New York Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin
NHL goalies are primarily tasked with stopping opposing players from racking up points, and they aren’t really expected to contribute any of their own. However, Rangers netminder Igor Shesterkin has gotten off to a hot start on the offensive front to the point where he’s outscored every single member of three different teams.
“Goaltender” is a pretty self-explanatory job title, and the people who play that position in the NHL spend the majority of their time on the ice attempting to stop the other team from putting the puck in the net.
However, they can occasionally help their own cause by contributing to their team’s scoring. That usually comes in the form of an assist, although prior to the start of the 2026-27 season, 17 goaltenders had been officially credited with scoring a goal in an NHL game on 20 different occasions.
However, only 11 of those men could claim a true “goalie goal” that came after they fired a puck from their own end into an empty net (Ron Hextall is the only player in NHL history to achieve that feat on two separate occasions).
On October 1st, Rangers goalie Igor Shesterkin made that number an even dozen when he scored the 13th goalie goal in NHL history to ice his team’s 5-1 victory over the Rangers.
He almost managed to pull it off in back-to-back games in a contest where he officially kicked off a points streak, and he’s also treated us to one of the quirkiest stats to come out of the current NHL season so far.
Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin has more points than every player on the Red Wings, Stars, and Devils
On Sunday, the Rangers improved to 3-1 with a 4-2 victory over the Mammoth, and it looked like Shesterkin would have scored his second goal of the season if Mikhail Sergachev hadn’t dropped back to stop the shot he fired down the rink with just under a minute remaining in the third period.
However, he’d already secured a two-game points streak around 30 seconds before that attempt, as he was credited with the secondary assist on the empty-netter that Eeli Tolvanen scored to pad New York’s lead.

That gives him a goal an assist on the season, and as one Reddit user pointed out, that gives him more points than every single player on the Red Wings. However, Detroit isn’t the only team he’s outdone, as no player on the Stars or Devils has recorded more than a single point so far.
It’s worth noting that Sheshterkin has appeared in three games while Detroit, New Jersey, and Dallas have only played two apiece. However, we’re still talking about a goaltender in a league where Jacob Markström led every person at that position in points last season with…four (all of which came on an assist).
There’s virtually no chance he’ll sustain his current pace, but if he does, he’ll finish the year with 26 goals and 58 points.
