With each new report, it becomes more and more likely that we have seen Carson Wentz take his last snap with the Indianapolis Colts. Today, it became even more clear just how ready the Colts are to move on.

Ian Rapoport went on The Pat McAfee Show today and said that the Colts are “actively looking” for an upgrade at quarterback right now.

With the Carson Wentz era seemingly coming to an end shortly after it began, the question for the Colts now becomes who exactly do they think they can land that would be an upgrade over Wentz?

There are currently 3 major options that stand out, but all of them come with obstacles. First is Deshaun Watson. It’s almost a certainty the Watson will never play for the Texans again, but we still don’t know if or when he’ll return to the NFL. Beyond that, we don’t know if he’ll face a suspension if he is able to return.

Then there’s Russell Wilson. He’d certainly be an upgrade for the Colts, but the Seahawks haven’t really given us reason to believe they want to trade him.

Aaron Rodgers is a possibility, but the Colts don’t really offer him a better chance to win than the Packers and don’t have a receiver anywhere close to Davante Adams. If Rodgers leaves Green Bay, it seems more likely that he’d end up with the Broncos or Steelers.

Once you get past those 3, the next tier of QBs who might actually be traded this offseason is made up of players like Kirk Cousins and Derek Carr.

A Carr-Wentz swap is an idea that has already been floated this offseason, but Carr isn’t exactly a huge upgrade over Wentz if he’s actually an upgrade at all. The Raiders also don’t seem particularly interested in letting Carr go with reports surfacing that they could offer him a contract extension.

Cousins is an interesting option here. Despite how the media portrays him, he’s probably an upgrade over Wentz and could probably take the Colts to the playoffs. It would really just come down to two questions for the Colts. Is making the playoffs enough to be worth trading whatever they’d have to for Cousins and how long do they think the 34 year old can lead the team?

The Colts are clearly not happy about how their first season with Carson Wentz ended, but they’re not going to find it very easy to replace him.
