Gymnastics is already one of the most popular events at the Summer Olympics. People like watching Men’s Artistic Gymnastics, but they really love watching Women’s Artistic Gymnastics with stars like Simone Biles.
Now, the International Olympic Committee is set to expand the number of mixed events throughout the Olympic program, and one is coming to gymnastics. There will be a mixed team competition at the 2028 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles, California.
While most of the focus is on the individuals in artistic gymnastics, the Olympics does hold a pretty prestigious team competition. Teams (and individuals) qualify for their respective finals on the first Saturday (men’s) and first Sunday (women’s) and then compete in team finals on the first Monday and Tuesday.
Now, a new module of competition will be brought in in the form of a mixed team competition, with other sports also getting the same thing. Here’s USA Today with more details.
The 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles will feature an expanded program with new mixed-gender team events in several marquee sports, including golf and gymnastics.
The International Olympic Committee announced the new mixed-gender events Wednesday when it unveiled the entire sport program for the 2028 Summer Games. They will help bring a team twist to Olympic golf, which previously only featured individual men’s and women’s competition, and a new dimension to gymnastics, where team competitions at the Olympics had been divided by gender.
What format will these events have? Who knows. But, this will certainly spice up the 2028 LA Olympics and give Team USA a chance to pick up two more golds.
