Being a fan of the New York Mets is… an experience. An experience that I certainly would not recommend to anyone who hasn’t been born into it. But, for all of the shit we’ve had to eat during my lifetime, there’s been a spot so bright in recent years that it almost — *almost* — makes it all worth it: and that bright spot is Jacob deGrom, the world’s best pitcher and one of the best pitchers in the history of Major League Baseball.

Still just 32-years-old, which is relatively young for a pitcher of his pedigree, deGrom has already established himself as a historic talent: in 2018, deGrom was the NL ERA leader and won the Cy Young Award. Then, the following year, he led the NL in strikeouts and won a second Cy Young Award. Then, in 2020, he led the NL in strikeouts while finishing third in Cy Young voting.

2021 looks to be more of the same from deGrom, whose stuff is arguably nastier than it’s ever been as his fastball is, somehow, faster than it’s ever been. The members of the St. Louis Cardinals Low-A affiliate, the Palm Beach Cardinals, learned that the hard way on Thursday night as deGrom made a rehab start against them, leading to some truly hilarious tweets from both the organization itself and baseball fans.

deGrom — who has been out of the Mets’ lineup since May 9 due to back tightness — finished the game with a line of 3 innings pitched, 0 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, and 8 strikeouts on 41 pitches. Luckily for New York Mets fans, their ace shouldn’t be in the minors much longer, as deGrom’s stint on the injured list was categorized as being merely precautionary so that the tightness in deGrom’s back didn’t affect his otherworldly mechanics.

The Mets will be back on the field tonight when they kick off a three-game series against the Miami Marlins.
