When you consider hockey players use razor-sharp skates to navigate the ice, it’s kind of amazing injuries stemming from inadvertent encounters with those blades are pretty few and far between. Unfortunately, Bruins forward Jakub Lauko fell victim to one of those incidents against the Blackhawks, but he seems to be in pretty good spirits based on the update he provided.

There have been a couple of pretty terrifying incidents involving NHL players who were inadvertently slashed by a skate, as Sabres goalie Clint Malarchuk and Panthers forward Richard Zedník both came close to bleeding to death after getting cut in the vicinity of a major artery.

The equipment guys rock on the rink tends to do a pretty solid job protecting vulnerable areas, but there’s still only so much you can do to avoid ending up in the path of a rouge hockey skate.

Lauko learned that the hard way when the Boston Bruins headed to Chicago to face off against the Blackhawks on Tuesday thanks to what transpired midway through the third period.

The center entered the offensive zone with the puck before ending up on the ice after getting checked by Jarred Tinordi, and a scary scene unfolded when Jason Dickinson swooped in to battle for the puck and accidentally kicked him in the face (the clip itself isn’t that gruesome, but I’ll let you decided if you want to watch it).

Lauko was seen clutching his face as he quickly skated to the bench, and while it appeared to be pretty serious, he thankfully only needed “a few stitches” to seal up the cut near his left eye.

It’s unclear if he’ll be able to suit up for Boston’s showdown with the Ducks on Thursday, and while Bruins coach Jim Montgomery didn’t provide an immediate update on his availability, he noted Lauko’s “not going to be looking good for a little while.”

The man at the receiving end of the skate blade seemed to echo that sentiment when he hopped online on Wednesday afternoon, as he declined to share a picture of the damage but nonetheless gave us a solid idea of his current status with the help of a deformed orc from Lord of the Rings.

Well played.
