This season has been a tough one for Jameis Winston. After struggling through the team’s first 3 games, Winston suffered fractures in his back and a ruptured tendon in his foot.

The injuries caused Jameis to miss a few games and during that time, Andy Dalton stepped up as the team’s quarterback, but many expected Jameis to get the job back when he was ready to return.

That hasn’t been the case. Jameis has been back for a couple of weeks now, but the New Orleans Saints have stuck with Dalton.

Today, Jameis commented on what it’s like for him to not be playing.

This certainly isn’t where anybody expected the Saints to be when they signed Jameis to a 2-year $28 million contract over the summer. He was supposed to be firmly in control of the starting job after performing well last season before a knee injury derailed his year.

When the team brought Dalton in over the summer, the expectation was that the move was supposed to give them a more dependable option that Taysom Hill if Jameis was hurt. Dalton’s struggles with the Bears, Cowboys, and Bengals over the past 3 seasons didn’t make him an obvious candidate to replace Winston.

The decision to stick with Dalton is one that really hasn’t made all that much sense for the Saints lately. The team is just 2-5 with him at quarterback and he hasn’t even played particularly well recently.

He tossed a pair of pick-6s to the Cardinals a few weeks ago and over the past two weeks the team has scored a combined 23 points.

Dalton also is not under contract after this season while Jameis has another year on his deal.

Unfortunately for both of these quarterbacks, it seems like they’re just holding on to the position until the New Orleans Saints can draft their long-term answer in April.
