James Franklin lost yet another big college football game on Saturday as Penn State fell to Ohio State at home. Legendary play-by-play announcer Gus Johnson immediately put him on blast in front of a massive audience on Fox as fans booed him into the locker room.
It was a rough way to go out for the Nittany Lions’ head coach, again.
Franklin, 52, was hired in 2014. This is his 11th season in Happy Valley, which is not so happy right now. Even though Penn State has won 11 games in five of the last 11 years and began the 2024 season at 7-0, it can’t seem to get the right result when it matters most!
That is the biggest knock on Franklin. Regardless of how many games he wins in total, he cannot figure out how to win against elite opponents.
Here are some numbers that really put Penn State’s unfortunate reality in perspective.
James Franklin is 1-7 against top-10 teams at home, 6-10 against ranked teams at home, 1-9 against top-five teams regardless of location, and 1-10 against Ohio State regardless of location. There is no way to sugar coat it. The Nittany Lions lose (almost) every big game.
Saturday was not the exception.
The Buckeyes used a controversial taunting call in the first half to their advantage and took a lead they would not give back. Neither team found the end zone during the second half.
Ohio State beat Penn State 20-13, which made Johnson very happy. (He might have some Buckeye bias!)

THE, world famous Buckeyes win it… and Ohio State right back in the National Championship picture."

Although both sides did not play particularly well, the latter converted only three of 11 attempts on third down, committed three more penalties and punted twice as often. That won’t cut it.
Johnson roasted Franklin in front of a massive television audience as soon as the clock hit zero.
But… once again… James Franklin… UNABLE TO WIN THE BIG GAME!

Penn State fans would not dispute what Fox’s play-by-play announcer had to say.
To express their displeasure with yet another frustrating result, they booed their head coach off of the field. Some of them even called for him to be fired.

Franklin was especially trigged by what one fan had to say. He stopped what he was doing and chirped back at the heckler from just outside the tunnel.

Yikes.
Not only did James Franklin lose another big game at home, he was put on blast by Gus Johnson and got into it with a fan. That is a brutal sequence of events that surely won’t go over well in State College.
