Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes, his wife Brittany, and his coach Andy Reid were all very angry that a referee actually made the correct call on a play that could have helped them with the game on Sunday.
But were they aware that Kadarius Toney wasn’t the only Kansas City player who lined up illegally on that same play?
Probably not. Because if they were aware of it they probably wouldn’t have been so loud and insufferable in the moments following the play.
The other player in question, offensive tackle Jawaan Taylor, was also lined up illegally as an eagle-eyed NFL fan on X (formerly Twitter) pointed out Monday morning.
What's even more hilarious is Jawaan Taylor is illegally lined up https://t.co/tEDFoPgx4C

So in actuality, the Chiefs could have benefited by the refs NOT calling Taylor for illegal formation if they hadn’t called a penalty on Toney.
Being penalized for lining up illegally and other tactics that are against the rules is nothing new for Taylor either.
In the very first week of the season, Jawaan Taylor repeatedly lined up illegally and jumped early on plays and the referees never called him on any of them.
At one point it got so bad during the game that NBC rules specialist Terry McAulay said Taylor wasn’t “remotely close” to being lined up legally.
Then, in Week 2, Taylor was penalized five times. Once for false starts, once for illegal formation and twice for holding.
So let’s imagine just for a moment. What would be the top story today if the refs had not only eaten their whistles on Kadarius Toney, but also, as they did on Sunday, Jawaan Taylor?
I can tell you what it would be. It would be the same story that the NFL had on its hands after the Chiefs beat the Jets 23-20. A win that was aided by, wait for it… the refs not calling a blatant penalty on… Jawaan Taylor.
And if you think Von is offsides, what’s your response to Jawaan also moving at the top here right before the ball is snapped? pic.twitter.com/Ym5XUzWIob
