Kenley Jansen was unhappy with a Jeff McNeil bunt single.
Kenley Jansen was not happy with a ninth inning bunt by A’s infielder Jeff McNeil. The Detroit closer confronted McNeil after recording the final out. He took offense to the antics.
The Tigers led by three runs at the time. It was a cheap single with two outs that very briefly kept the contest alive. It was also a high IQ play.
While it’s rare to see a three-run ninth inning deficit erased, crazier things have happened on the diamond. The A’s threatened in their final at-bat. McNeil’s bunt may have seemed bush league to Jansen, but it brought the tying run to the plate.
He was still trying to win the game.

The A’s trailed 8-5 entering their last at-bat. With two outs and a runner on third base, McNeil bunted a 1-1 pitch away from an infield shift. The ball rolled harmlessly down the third base line. It drove a run in while keeping the team’s slim comeback hopes alive.
Jansen stared McNeil down after he arrived at first base. The feelings of animosity wouldn’t dissipate.
After getting the next hitter to fly out to left field, Jansen recorded a save and ended the game. He immediately turned to McNeil to further display his disgust with the bunt.

Benches eventually cleared seeing the pitcher confront McNeil, though the interaction was largely uneventful. Another view of the argument captured both Jansen and McNeil’s response to the situation.

Jeff McNeil made the right play.
The Tigers were giving him a free base and RBI. He was smart to take it. The bunt not only pushed a run across the plate, but it gave the A’s an opportunity to try and win the game.
The single brought the tying run to the plate. One swing could’ve evened the score. It didn’t work out in the A’s favor, but McNeil gave his team the best shot at a comeback.
Former A’s pitcher Dallas Braden said the following about the play on social media.
Down by 3 with a runner on 3rd & the defense back, Jeff McNeil bunted for a hit & drove a run in & brought the tying run to the plate which also happened to be the guy who had just launched a ball out of the yard his prev AB. Kenley didn’t like that Jeff McNeil tried to win the baseball game he was playing in & felt disrespected that McNeil didn’t try to win the game the way KENLEY wanted him to win it. Bad on Jeff McNeil for getting an RBI hit to extend the inning & bring the tying run to plate. Not a great look at all for Kenley.

Kenley Jansen wasn’t happy about having the blemish on his stat sheet. He finished with a final line of one run on two hits with two strikeouts in an inning of work.
McNeil didn’t “earn it.” The Tigers gave him a free hit. He took advantage by using high IQ. Jansen’s reaction didn’t make much sense.
