The golf world is currently grappling with a growing scourge of fans who’ve been unable to behave while attending events in person. Those incidents have mostly involved people who play the sport for a living, but Jerry Rice went out of his way to confront a heckler he chased down at a celebrity tournament.

The British Open is unfolding at Royal Birkdale this week, and fans who attend the major will be expected to abide by a new code of conduct the R&A rolled out to address a growing trend involving spectators who’ve fostered a toxic atmosphere at tournaments where they’ve crossed the line.

It would be foolish to suggest there have never been hecklers in the gallery, but it’s pretty evident there’s been a spike in the number of people who’ve thrown decorum to the wind while attending an event in recent years.

A number of pros (including Jordan Spieth and Matt Fitzpatrick) have linked the issue to the rise of sports betting, but it also seems safe to assume some of the behavior is driven by a quest for online clout in addition to general idiocy that may or may not be fueled by excessive amounts of booze.

There’s no way to know what inspired one person who attended the American Century Championship to heckle Jerry Rice, but they probably regretted that decision based on how the retired wide receiver reacted.

Jerry Rice ducked under the ropes to chase after someone who heckled him during a tournament

The American Century Championship is a relatively low-stakes tournament compared to the ones on the PGA Tour, but the celebrities who are invited to face off at Edgewood Tahoe Resort each year still tend to take it pretty seriously when you consider they can also win a solid chunk of money if they enter as a pro.

This year, a grand total of 90 people who’ve made a name for themselves in sports and entertainment faced off in a three-round showdown where retired tennis player Mardy Fish won his third title and took home a cool $150,000.

Jerry Rice ended up finishing in 42nd, and while you might think the players who participated didn’t have to worry about fans trying to get under their skin, that was not the case with the legendary wide receiver.

Someone who attended the tournament filmed Rice teeing off on what appeared to be the par-4 8th hole, and a clip captured a spectator muttering his name just before he started his backswing and a resounding “FORE!” that was belted out after he hit his shot.

The former 49er immediately turned around to try to identify the culprit, and he made his way under the ropes to chase them down after some onlookers helped him identify the guilty party. The person filming the clip didn’t join the pursuit, but it looked like Rice had a few words with whoever was responsible for resuming his round.

This isn’t the first time Rice confronted someone at the tournament, as he also had a very testy exchange with a reporter in 2024.
