The New York Jets and their star defensive tackle Quinnen Williams reportedly “aren’t close to an agreement” on a new contract extension.

According to ESPN’s Rich Cimini, the negotiations have hit a roadblock, despite the fact that the market for second-contract deals for top defensive tackles has already been established.

The recent extension signed by Dexter Lawrence of the New York Giants has added another data point to the ongoing negotiations between Williams and the Jets. As of now, Williams has decided to skip voluntary workouts and is currently operating under the fifth-year option of his rookie contract, which means he is set to become a free agent in 2024.

Cimini suggests that the Jets might consider using the franchise tag on Williams in 2024 if an agreement cannot be reached before then.

Quinnen Williams, who was named a first-team All-Pro last season, is undoubtedly seeking a contract that surpasses the deals received by Lawrence and Jeffery Simmons earlier this offseason. The Tennessee Titans recently signed Simmons to a lucrative four-year, $94 million contract, while the Giants secured Lawrence’s services with a four-year, $90 million deal. Williams, given his impressive performance on the field, is expected to possibily command an even higher salary.

It’s been recently reported that Williams is seeking a contract worth between $23-$25 million a year from the Jets.

The Jets’ failure to make substantial progress in contract negotiations with their defensive star has raised concerns among fans. Williams has been a standout performer for the team since being drafted third overall in 2019, consistently demonstrating his exceptional talent and contributing to the team’s defense. His absence from voluntary workouts further exacerbates the tension between the player and the organization.

While contract negotiations in professional sports can often be protracted and complex, it is crucial for the Jets to prioritize reaching a resolution with Williams. The All-Pro defensive tackle’s impact on the field has been undeniable, and his absence from the team’s long-term plans would leave a significant void in their defense.
