It appears to be the McAfee Way or the highway at ESPN
Pat McAfee is arguably the most powerful person at ESPN right now. So powerful, in fact, that the general M.O. of the network seems to be either McAfee’s way or the highway.
According to reports, Jim Gaiero — who has been the lead producer on College GameDay for 10 years and at ESPN for over 30 — has been moved off of the long-running college pregame show. Matthew Garrett, a VP of production at ESPN, is expected to take over as GameDay‘s executive producer.
Sources say the lead College GameDay producer’s removal had something to do with ‘friction’ with Pat McAfee
Multiple sources who spoke to Awful Announcing said that “friction” with Pat McAfee, the de facto face of ESPN right now, is the reason behind Gaiero’s departure.
ESPN has countered those assertions, however, and said that Gaiero is moving into a significant role preparing ESPN’s Super Bowl pregame studio programming, will produce Thursday night college football, and will eventually become lead producer for the Masters and PGA Championship in 2028.
Sources also added that the move was a better fit for Gaireo’s lifestyle, citing that it will be “good for him to get his weekends back with a daughter in middle school.
Awful Announcing‘s insiders, however, state that the timing of the announcement is inconsistent with a purely career-motivated move, as the College GameDay episode of the season is just over a week away.
“Many point to the timing of the announcement as ‘not passing the smell test at all,’ and that the move, if made for the reasons ESPN has put forth, would not have been handled like this from a timing standpoint. Multiple people compared it to the sudden announcement of ESPN cutting ties with longtime production executive Lee Fitting, who oversaw College GameDay as well as Monday Night Football.”
Back in October 2025, McAfee took a shot at the “old white people” at ESPN who “hate him,” which sources say was directed at Gaiero and Garrett.
“If you think about old white people and old ESPN people, those are really the people that hate me the most at this stage of life,” McAfee said.
“Now granted, there’s some other groups that certainly have threatened my life on a pretty regular basis, I’d say they hate me too. But throughout the entirety, old whites and the old ESPN people over the last like three years have really hated me. That’s who all the producers are of GameDay too. So now — it’s been a fun run. College football is great. OK, cheers. Have a great day.”
At the time, ESPN executive Burke Magnus defended McAfee’s comments, saying the former Indianapolis Colts punter was “trying to fit himself into a corporate environment, which is really challenging.”
ESPN appears to be putting most of its chips in the McAfee basket, as it followed up giving him a ~$60M/year contract by adding him to the Monday Night Countdown crew.
Between his scheduled appearances on The Pat McAfee Show, College GameDay, and Monday Night Countdown, ESPN currently has 15 guaranteed hours of McAfee programming per week.
