Jim Harbaugh has spent his coaching career turning ordinary conversations into locker-room speeches, so naturally his marriage advice sounds like it should be painted above a weight-room door. After Justin Herbert announced his engagement to Madison Beer, the Los Angeles Chargers coach told the couple to “attack each day with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind together.”
Harbaugh delivered the line during an appearance on Up & Adams, where he also said Herbert visibly “lights up” when discussing Beer. It was warm, sincere and somehow still sounded like Harbaugh expected the newly engaged couple to establish the run and win the fourth quarter.
Jim Harbaugh Has Apparently Installed A Marriage Offense
The phrase “enthusiasm unknown to mankind” has long been one of Harbaugh’s favorite motivational sayings. Most people would advise a young couple to communicate, be patient and never go to bed angry. Harbaugh essentially told them to wake up at 5:15 a.m., attack breakfast and pursue marital excellence with championship-level effort.
That is perfect Jim Harbaugh.
You can picture him drawing the relationship on a whiteboard. Communication is the offensive line. Trust establishes the running game. Date night needs better pad level. Never let the defense dictate which restaurant you choose.
Harbaugh’s full message was genuinely supportive. He praised Beer’s character, said his teenage daughter approves of her and explained that the relationship has brought out a noticeable happiness in his quarterback.
Herbert and Beer announced their engagement on July 28 with a joint Instagram post featuring photos from an outdoor proposal. The couple first sparked dating rumors in August 2025, then publicly confirmed the relationship during the football season.
The engagement has also produced a version of Herbert that Chargers fans rarely see. During a SiriusXM interview, the normally reserved quarterback called Beer his “forever teammate” and said she had changed his life.
“Forever teammate” is an elite quarterback phrase. Other people say soulmate. Herbert apparently studied the depth chart and awarded Beer a lifetime roster spot.

The couple then appeared together at The Bolt, where a training-camp video showed them sitting on the field while Beer ran her hand through Herbert’s hair. The clip quickly spread online because nothing makes football fans behave normally like seeing their quarterback relaxed and happy near a practice field.
Herbert had already received Harbaugh’s blessing to miss part of the Chargers’ voluntary offseason program while supporting Beer during her European tour. Harbaugh described the trip as something Herbert would remember forever, which may be the healthiest sentence an NFL coach has ever produced about voluntary workouts.
Now Herbert is back at camp preparing for his seventh NFL season and planning a wedding. Harbaugh, meanwhile, has apparently appointed himself relationship coordinator.
There are worse people to ask. Harbaugh has never been accused of approaching anything with low energy, and nobody can question his commitment to attacking every available day with alarming enthusiasm.
Still, his advice creates several important follow-up questions.
Does the wedding require full pads? Will the rehearsal dinner include a two-minute drill? Is the best man responsible for setting the edge? Does Harbaugh object when the officiant asks everyone to remain seated?
Herbert called Beer his forever teammate. Harbaugh supplied the game plan.
All that remains is attacking matrimony with an enthusiasm previously unknown to mankind.
