It’s Jimothy’s world now, we are all just living in it. And if the Seattle Mariners, currently 1.5 games out in the American League West, go on a run to the World Series during the rest of this Major League Baseball season, there can be only one reason why.
It now appears that much like the Rally Monkey became the unofficial mascot for the Los Angeles Angels in 2000 helped the team to the 2002 World Series win over the San Francisco Giants, Jimothy is now the motivation behind the Mariners.
For those unfamiliar, which seems hard to believe at this point, Jimothy is a raccoon that has been spotted around the Seattle area. Area residents have compared him to cryptids like the chupacabra due to his deformed spine and his rambunctious attitude.
Since going viral a couple of weeks ago, the spunky raccoon has quickly become not only a local celebrity but a worldwide superstar thanks to the internet.
The face of the franchise, Julio Rodriguez, was the man who handed out the new batting practice shirts to teammates on Friday afternoon. So, Seattle Mariners players are not only wearing Jimothy t-shirts during batting practice, Jimothy has been winning the Salmon Races at T-Mobile Park.
According to an MLB.com article about the raccoon, in the Mariners’ first 12 innings after the All-Star break, the Seattle offense scored zero runs. Since Jimothy appeared on the scoreboard at T-Mobile Park, the Mariners have outscored opponents 18-5, snagged three straight wins and gotten back over .500.
Jimothy for the win-othy, indeed.
Jimothy has become a worldwide sensation
Jimothy the mutant raccoon has not only triggered interest in a 7-year-old Tibetan spaniel that also suffers from short spine syndrome, and inspired the Mariners to playing better baseball, Adobe has discovered that he has truly become a cultural phenomenon.
According to a study of thousands of Adobe Firefly prompts, raccoon imagery has increased by 75% from its June/July baseline since the mutant raccoon’s emergence on the internet.
Also, creators have included prompts featuring “Jimothy” in over 15% of all raccoon prompts since July 18, and they are reimagining raccoons with descriptors like hunched, short and cute.
