The NFL Combine began this week with future pros showing off their talents to the league’s scouts and coaches. While the on-field testing didn’t start until today, players have been interviewing with organizations since Tuesday while also providing medical examinations.

The highly anticipated “hand season” for quarterbacks has also taken place and it’s put a bit of a damper on the outlook for one potential first round pick.

Pitt’s Kenny Pickett measured in with a hand size of 8.5 inches which would be the smallest of any passer currently in the league. The comparatively small measurement has scouts doubting his ability to both grip the ball and provide the velocity needed at the NFL level.

The average hand size of NFL quarterbacks is actually closer to 9.5 inches. Surprisingly, Russell Wilson leads the way of starting quarterbacks at 10.25 inches.

With that being said, hand size is not the end-all-be-all metric for NFL success.

In fact, just two years ago, the same debate was being had for a former Heisman trophy winner that’s done pretty well for himself in the league to this point.

Old Joe Burrow Tweet Going Viral With “Hand Szn” In Full Effect

Ahead of the 2020 NFL Draft, it was Joe Burrow that was being criticized for his 9-inch hand measurement. That hand size was the second smallest of any NFL starting quarterback last year.

When critics initially came out to doubt the future of the national champion, Burrow gave a hilarious response on Twitter which has gone viral once again.

Despite the criticism, Burrow was still chosen with the first overall selection. In year two, he led the Bengals to their first Super Bowl appearance since 1988.

It’s safe to say hand size was not a major issue for the talented young passer.

Pickett, on the other hand, won’t go No. 1 overall, but he should find a way into the first round. We’ll have to wait and see if those tiny hands will have any effect on his NFL future.
