John Mateer is absolutely jacked. The starting quarterback at Oklahoma added a lot of muscle to his frame during the offseason.

He looks like a linebacker!

One of the most hyped players in the country will hope to find greater success during his fifth and final season of college football. It cannot hurt to get even stronger.

Oklahoma will go as far as the quarterback takes them.

Last year did not go as Mateer or the Sooners had hoped. Oklahoma won 10 games and reached the College Football Playoff but could not get past Alabama during the first round. Its quarterback completed only 62.2% of his passes (a career-low) and threw 11 interceptions to only 14 touchdowns. His struggles, which might stem from a frustrating side-arm throwing motion, included two three-interception games against Texas and LSU.

Not ideal.

However, Mateer suffered a hand injury during a Week 4 win over Auburn. He rushed to get back on the field, with help from Dr. Steven Shin, and never quite looked like himself down the back stretch of the regular season or the playoff.

John Mateer took a big step down in 2025 compared to his third season at Washington State in 2024. Maybe that had to do with the level of competition. Maybe it was the thumb. Perhaps it was both.

Whatever the reason, Oklahoma did not get as far into the postseason as it had hoped in large part because of iffy quarterback play. The expectation is that this season will be different. Brent Venables expects to be back in the Playoff and actually win a few games.

Oklahoma’s schedule is not easy but another 10-win season is well within the realm of possibility.

The Sooners will go as far as Mateer can take them. He is the differentiating factor, good or bad.

John Mateer added a lot of muscle to his frame and got jacked.

The Manning Passing Academy took place in Louisiana over the weekend. John Mateer was one of the college quarterbacks invited to serve as a counselor and to compete amongst his fellow signal-callers.

Although the rising fifth-year senior made a few decent throws, it was his physique that really grabbed the headlines. He is jacked.

Mateer’s arms are ripped. His shoulders look like boulders.

Oklahoma listed him at 6-foot-3, 218 pounds on its spring football roster. I would guess that he is closer to 225 today.

This photo in particular really got people talking:

Mateer is a quarterback who plays with a little bit of reckless abandon. Adding additional muscle to his frame will help him a lot in terms of taking hits. It will also help with his arm strength. The Sooners would love to go deep more often!
