Comments made in the broadcast booth by John Smoltz during Saturday night’s Yankees game are going viral on social media. And New York fans are letting the color commentator have it after praising the opponent during the team’s shutout victory.

Smoltz, a former big-league pitcher for the Braves, was noting Chicago’s Matt Swarmer’s abilities on the mound. Through the first three innings, the righty had surrendered just a single run to a dangerous Yankees lineup. Through those first three frames, Swarmer had held New York to just two hits, though one was a home run from Aaron Judge.

Smoltz was specifically commenting on the pitcher’s ability to limit damage without having top notch velocity.

“I’m impressed with this kid. He’s pitching top of the zone at 91 MPH. You can do that in this league. Everyone says, ‘Oh, you’ve got to be able to throw 98,’ well he’s got funk and spin.”

Unfortunately, the praise came at the worst possible time.

Right around the time Smoltz says, “funk and spin,” Giancarlo Stanton turns around a Swarmer off-speed pitch, sending to the left field stands.

It was the hardest hit ball of the year, coming off the bat at an insane 119.8 MPH.

The laser beam got out of the stadium in a hurry, reaching the second deck on an absolute line. The bomb put New York up 2-0 in what would eventually become an 8-0 blowout.

Swarmer gave up six home runs in the game.
