The University of Michigan continues to prevent its college basketball program from achieving its full potential by sticking true to its strict admissions standard. It has reportedly denied one of the top transfers in the country for the third year in a row.
First-year head coach Dusty May must be furious!
This year’s snafu revolves around Johnell Davis. Widely considered to be the best guard in the transfer portal, the 22-year-old was crucial to the success of FAU in each of the last two years. He averaged 13.8 points, 5.4 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.6 steals in 26 per minutes per game during the Owls’ run to the Final Four in 2022/23. He averaged 18.2 points, 6.3 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.4 steals in 32.3 minutes last season.
It was expected that Davis would follow May, his former head coach in Boca Raton, to Ann Arbor. There was very little conversation about the possibility that he could end up elsewhere. His transfer was a lock.
Until it wasn’t!
The pendulum swung in the opposite direction over the last few days. Barring a last minute change, Davis is not going to play for the Wolverines.
According to budding transfer portal insider Zyavier Ricks, he was denied admission.
This is the third year in a row where this has happened!
Terrence Shannon Jr. was slated to play for Juwan Howard when he left Texas Tech in 2022. Not enough credits were going to transfer with him, so Michigan’s admissions office got cold feet and shut it down. Shannon went to Illinois.
The same thing happened to Caleb Love last year. He left UNC after three seasons and committed to Michigan. Academic credit issues arose in Ann Arbor. Love flipped his commitment to Arizona and averaged 18 points per game last season.
