Johntay Cook’s brief stint at Washington is officially over. Whispers of the former five-star receiver’s departure surfaced on social media early Tuesday. Those rumors were confirmed soon after.
The Huskies have reportedly parted ways with their transfer headliner after just two weeks. Cook’s plans for the future remain unclear.
After initially signing with Texas out of high school, many expected big thing from the highly touted pass catcher. He made an immediate impact as a freshman, appearing in 14 games with the Longhorns. Unfortunately, he failed to see an uptick in production as a sophomore.
Upset with his place on the depth chart, he opted to part ways with Texas. There was some confusion as to whether that exit was mutual or mandatory. Either way, his time with the football program officially ended in November.
After hopping in the transfer portal, he received interest from a number of notable programs. Colorado appeared an early contender, but he ultimately signed with the Washington Huskies in late December.

Now, in early January, his time with his second school has come to an end. Reports of the split surfaced Tuesday night. Pete Nakos of On3 Sports says Cook was on campus just 48 hours. Not much is known about what transpired.
247 Sports described the breakup as a “parting of ways.” The decision reportedly came following a meeting between Cook and head coach Jedd Fisch.
Searching for clarity on the situation, many turned to Johntay Cook’s social media outlets. Soon after the news went public, the wideout got cryptic on Instagram.

Cook posted a photo of himself along with the song Heavy on my Heart by Lucki.
You said you believe in me /
I wanna know, do you even need me?I prolly made that s— look simple when everybody knew that s— get hard /
I prolly deserve to be the richest, I waited longer than everybody…Just ’cause I laugh, don’t mean it’s true, s— got a whole different meaning with you /
You prolly lied right to my face, I made you to think I’m believin’ you
Does it relate to the recent split with Washington? It’s unclear, as is the reasoning for his mysterious exit. For Cook, this means he’ll now search for a third home to continue his college career. The Huskies, meanwhile, now unexpectedly have to fill his spot.
