The Ryder Cup didn’t get off to the best of starts for Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas as they lost the event’s opening match to Sergio Garcia and Jon Rahm, but that’s not to say that the match didn’t have plenty of fireworks.

We thought that we may have seen the shot of the day when Garcia hit a ridiculous stinger off of the 13th tee, but then Spieth decided to use some magic of his own.

The Americans were in trouble on the Par 3 17th after two poor shots leaving Spieth on the side of a hill in ankle-high fescue. Spieth is a wizard with a wedge in his hands, but this shot may go down as one of his best escape jobs ever.

After somehow making solid contact with the golf ball, Spieth fell backward and couldn’t stop his forward momentum from moving toward Lake Michigan. As he was trying his best to stop from falling into the water, his ball fell from the sky near the pin.

Unfortunately, Thomas missed the must-make putt, but that shouldn’t take away from just how impressive Spieth’s chip shot was.

The spectacle on the 17th hole perfectly sums up Spieth and Thomas’ morning match. Spieth was on his game, while Thomas was struggling, especially with the putter.
