Former UFC fighter turned promoter Jorge Masvidal was impressed by what he saw from his friend Ilia Topuria this weekend.

On Saturday night, Topuria became the UFC’s new featherweight champion when he knocked out Alex Volkanovski in devastating fashion at UFC 298.

We sat down with Masvidal, who is currently promoting his March 2nd GameBred Bareknuckle MMA fight card that features former UFC heavyweight champion Junior Dos vs former BKFC champion Alan Belcher, and asked him what he thought about Topuria’s big win this weekend.

“First off, Volkanovski is one of the best, if not the best at 145 pounds for a long time. Volkanovski can do it all, he can wrestle, he can box, he can kick, he can submit you, he can do it all. That Ilia could come in there and do what he did is scary”

“You have to take a few steps back and see how young he is, he hasn’t gone through any wars, or had any physical damage. He’s fresh, he’s young, he’s brand new. He has a lot of talent, he has the looks, he speaks four languages. I’ve been telling people, check this guy out, he’s dangerous, he’s going to be champion one day..I think Ilia has a lot of good fights to look forward to, there are alot of fights that are favorable for him. I’m looking forward to seeing what the future has in store for him.”

Masvidal says he’s down to go Spain if the Topuria defends his belt overseas.

“One thousand percent I would go (to Spain), to be with my Latin people, witnessing history, it would be history and I would like to be a part of Latin history”
