South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer is on the hot seat.

The South Carolina football team landed a commitment from 5-star defensive back Joshua Dobson on Wednesday. In order to keep him in the class, they’ll likely need to honor one wish.

Dobson subtly implied that his recruitment is ultimately tied to the head coach. Without the Shane Beamer on the sidelines, the Gamecocks can kiss Dobson’s signature goodbye.

That’s not necessarily a surprise. Recruiting classes are always impacted by coaching changes. Typically, though, you don’t hear a recruit say it out loud before the fact.

Joshua Dobson commits to South Carolina.

The Palmetto State native is one of the top prospects in the 2027 cycle. He is currently considered a Top 20 talent nationally and the third-best player at his position. He is the No. 1 recruit in North Carolina following a transfer to Hough High School in Cornelius.

As a result, the cornerback’s recruitment has been competitive. He boasts offers from major programs throughout the country.

On Wednesday, he held a commitment ceremony at his high school. He chose the Gamecocks over Auburn, Michigan, and Texas A&M.

Dobson was asked about that decision in the moments that followed.

Joshua Dobson’s recruitment is not over.

While he insists that he’s “1000% committed” to South Carolina, he knows that other programs will continue to pursue. He left the door ever-so-slightly open on a flip.

“It’s long from over,” Dobson said. “Obviously, until I sign that dotted line, schools are going to try to reach out to me.”

Strings could be attached to his commitment. His demands don’t appear to be NIL related. Instead, they rest on the status of the coaching staff.

“I’ve built relationships at other places, but South Carolina’s been there since 8th grade,” he continued. “I had one main question: What’s the stability of (Shane) Beamer?… (The AD) has trust in Beamer and what he’s trying to do this season, and many more seasons. So, right now, South Carolina’s home.”

Beamer is on the hot seat after a 4-8 campaign. He’s expected to rebound after keeping a talented roster intact. His job is dependent on a bounce back.

Dobson admitted that Texas A&M and Michigan were major players in his recruitment. That interest hasn’t disappeared.

In the end, the Gamecocks won out. That could change with a coaching shake up. If South Carolina fires Shane Beamer, it will lose Joshua Dobson. The cornerback subtly confirmed it without saying it out loud.
