Pete Alonso has had an excellent first season with the Baltimore Orioles
The 2026 New York Mets season can’t come to an end soon enough. Unfortunately for the franchise and its fans, the baseball gods aren’t finished with them for the year just yet.
The decision to let potential future Hall of Fame first baseman Pete Alonso walk in the offseason has been well-documented and looks like a worse and worse decision with each passing day.
Two former New York Mets hit back-to-back home runs for the Baltimore Orioles while franchise star Juan Soto is already talking about next season
Alonso, who wanted to stay with the Mets, is leading the league for first basemen WAR (wins above replacement) and has 33 HR and 94 RBI on a .269 batting average for the season. He’s also started in all 141 of the Orioles’ games this season.
The Mets, on the other hand, assembled one of the most expensive rosters in baseball history this season and are currently in last place in the NL East with a record of 63-77.
One previous piece of that disastrous roster was Luis Robert Jr., who signed with the Orioles after being let go by the Mets and hit back-to-back home runs with Alonso on Thursday night.

“Damn, Mets can’t win. The Alonso non-signing was criminal, up there with the Tom Seaver nonsense. Maybe worse,” read the top reply to MLB’s tweet about the home runs.

Meanwhile, Juan Soto — who signed a 15-year, $765 million deal with New York last offseason — sounded slightly delusional when discussing the Mets’ prospects for the final 20ish games of the season.
“We’re not finished yet, we’re not done yet. Who knows what can happen. Finish strong… carry that into October or the next season,” Soto told reporters on Thursday.

The Mets are currently 10.5 games out of the final National League Wild Card spot with 22 games left to play.
