  • Former New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman was a recent guest on the ‘I Am Athlete’ podcast.
  • Edelman discussed how he feels better now than when he retired and then his former teammates came up, specifically a quote from Martellus Bennett ripping Jimmy Garoppolo to shreds.
  • Edelman read Bennett’s quote about Jimmy G and explained the context of it followed by “I can understand why Marty thinks like that.”

Former New England wide receiver Julian Edelman announced his retirement from the NFL on April 12, 2021 after 12 seasons with the Patriots. It really was incredible to see Edelman spend his entire career with one team when players move around so often these days. But those 3 Super Bowl wins definitely kept Edelman content during his time in New England.

Julian Edelman was a recent guest on the I Am Athlete podcast and a few short clips have gone viral. Edelman discussed how he actually feels better/healthier know than when he retired at a time when he was plagued by knee pain.

Then he was asked about a quote from his former teammate Martellus Bennett (2016/2017) who called former Patriots quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo ‘a b-tch’ in a lengthy rant about Jimmy G. Julian Edelman is handed the quote which eh reads and then responds to it and he’s not exactly rushing to defend Jimmy Garoppolo here.

Julian Edelman Explains Why His Former Teammate Martellus Bennett Called Jimmy Garoppolo ‘A B–ch’

Here’s the full quote from Martellus Bennett about Jimmy Garoppolo which is actually from October 2021:

“Bro, we lost two games. One of them was because Jimmy Garoppolo was being a b–ch. He decided not to play right before the game. Jacoby (Brissett) came out and played with a f—ed up thumb and played his heart out, but Jimmy was just being a b–ch about it all.”

“That’s why he … you can’t win with a b–ch for a quarterback, first of all. That was the whole thing with him: He didn’t want to come out and do anything because his agent was trying to protect his body or some s— like that. Which, I can’t fault him for that. But like, you should have made that decision on Thursday. Now it’s Sunday.

“So anyways, he’s not going out there, so now Jacoby straps up and we lost to the Buffalo Bills. We shouldn’t have lost. It was just last-minute, trying to make adjustments for what Jacoby could do.”

Here’s what Julian Edelman had to say in response to that (via the video above):

Julian Edelman: “Week 3 (in) like the first quarter against the Buffalo Bills or the Jets and he hurts is non-throwing shoulder, his left shoulder. And Jacoby came in and led us to a win.”

Brandon Marshall: “Was that (injury) a big deal? The non-throwing shoulder?”

Julian Edelman: “I mean… I don’t know. We were all football players here… But Jacoby tore his ligaments in his thumb in the win against the Week 3 team. And so we go into Week 4 and I guess Jimmy was practicing and then decided not to play and Jacoby played with no ligaments in his thumb which you can’t do that as a quarterback. Right? You can’t grip (the ball).

And a lot of guys got mad about it. I’m not gonna lie, I got mad about it. I sacrificed my body all day long. I was taking shots for this… Numbing up that… Ribs! Broken ribs… Shoulders… Grade-3… Hanging on by limbs just to play, y’know. And I can understand why Marty (Martellus Bennett) thinks like that.”

It sure sounds like Jimmy Garoppolo lost the locker room at that time, by practicing and then choosing not to play.

Julian Edelman is only 36 years old. He’s been retired since April 2021 so basically all of last season but he’s 8 years younger than Tom Brady… Just some food for thought as we inch closer to the 2022-23 NFL season.
