The Kansas City Chiefs play their first game of the preseason on Sunday.

Patrick Mahomes and the rest of the team’s starters will play in the first quarter.

As teams continue to get used to the 3-game format in the preseason, every coach around the league has been developing their own strategy for how to handle.

Some choose not to play their quarterback at all.

Some give them a series or two in one game.

Others give them plenty of time to play in the preseason to make sure they aren’t rusty at the start of the regular season.

Andy Reid has fallen into the 3rd category in the past and it looks like that will remain the case this year.

According to FOX 4 KC’s PJ Green, Andy Reid told the media that his starters will play the first quarter on Sunday against the Saints.

This approach is nothing new for Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs.

He had Patrick Mahomes play in each of the first two games of the preseason last year.

The first game came against the Bears and Mahomes played the first drive of the game, throwing 7 passes and ending the drive with a touchdown pass to Blake Bell.

They then ramped things up a bit in the second week of the preseason.

Mahomes got two long drives in against the Washington Commanders before being pulled from that game. The second time around, he attempted 19 passes, throwing for 162 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

This strategy seemed to work out pretty well for Mahomes and the Chiefs. The team got out to a fast start for the 2022 season, putting up 44 points in a week 1 demolition of the Arizona Cardinals.

The regular season ended with Patrick Mahomes winning the 2nd MVP award of his NFL career and the playoffs ended with the Chiefs lifting the Lombardi Trophy for the 2nd time in 4 years.

It seems Andy Reid sees no reason to change what has worked for them, so we’ll see a quarter from Patrick Mahomes and the rest of the starters on Sunday and then maybe get a bit more next weekend to prepare to defend their crown.
