Kansas City Police revealed on Friday that three people have been charged with firearms-related offenses. However, none of the charges are directly related to the victims of the shooting that took place on Wednesday during the Chiefs parade.
The Kansas City Star reports that charges have been filed against two juveniles.
The two teens are being held at a juvenile detention center on firearms-related and resisting arrest offenses connected to the mass shooting that killed one woman and wounded 22 others.
Due the ages of the suspects, many documents related to the case as well as the defendants’ names are currently not publicly available.
That could change if the final list of charges against the suspects results in a mandatory certification hearing to determine whether they should be tried in court as adults. Murder would be one charge that would require such a hearing.
“We expect to be at future hearings regarding theses individuals who were charged today in Family Court. We will continue to work closely with all authorities as the investigation continues,” said Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker.
Previous reports of a third person being detained were accurate, but that person was later released.
Another, different man, Jose L. Castillo, is facing a criminal charge for picking up a black Glock 22 off the ground during the chaos.
He is not a suspected shooter, but because he is a felon he has been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, KMBC News reports.
A witness told police that they saw Castillo pick up a gun that was dropped by one of the people involved in a fight prior to the shooting and walked away with it in his possession.
Castillo claimed that he thought the gun may have belonged to a law enforcement officer and was planning on returning it to police, but was arrested before he was able to do so. He is scheduled to be in court on Friday.
