Truth be told, I like Kevin Durant. Well, actually, let me clarify: I don’t actively dislike the guy.
Was his move to the Golden State Warriors objectively soft and ultimately detrimental to the NBA? Absolutely. But do I hate the guy? Absolutely not. He seems like a legitimately good dude and I won’t forget the days where he was arguably the most universally liked superstar in the league. Who can forget his truly moving MVP speech? That Kevin Durant still exists… somewhere.
But that doesn’t mean KD is totally innocent in my book, either. There’s the fact that he’s a 31-year-old man who openly engages in Twitter trolling despite being one of the most famous and successful athletes on the planet. There’s his constant “why me?” and “y’all (the media) are so mean” attitude. And, of course, there’s his league-crippling move to the Warriors.
The guy is human — just like the rest of us, he has his flaws. But that doesn’t mean he’s no longer capable of occassionaly saying the right things, and that’s exactly what he did when he explained his opinion on marijuana use to Matt Barnes on the All The Smoke podcast.
“It’s one of those plants that’s an acquired taste. If you love it, you love it. If you don’t, you’re not even going to be pick it up. It shouldn’t even be a discussion these days,” Durant said. “It’s just like, marijuana is marijuana. It’s not harmful to anybody. It can only help and enhance and do good things. I feel like it shouldn’t even be a huge topic around it anymore.”
And that’s facts from KD. The more A-list athletes like him that speak out on the issue, the better. So props, KD — you’ve made yourself look cool for once. Please don’t ruin it with a lame Friday night Twitter argument with @RussWestIsBest69.
