When it comes to women’s college basketball, nobody means business like Kim Mulkey. The 59-year-old head coach of LSU is an Olympic gold medalist as a player and the first person in NCAA women’s basketball history to win a national championship as a player, assistant coach and head coach.

Needless to say, she knows a thing or two about the game.

After coaching Baylor from 2000-2021, Mulkey sent shockwaves through the college basketball world when she left the Bears to return to her home state and takeover the LSU program back in April. While in Texas, she went 632-104 with three NCAA Championships.

The Tigers, prior to Mulkey’s arrival, had not made it out of the first round of the NCAA Tournament since 2013 and went 9-13 in 2020/21. In year one of the Mulkey era, the losing record has already become a thing of the past.

LSU finished the regular season at 23-4, earning a No. 2 seed in the SEC Tournament. Despite the quick turnaround and immediate success, Mulkey wants to be very clear that this is only just the start.

Her team has not yet arrived.

After the final regular season game over the weekend, Mulkey said that even though her team is having a strong year, LSU women’s basketball is not yet a great program. During her comments, she took a very specific shot at Texas Football, referencing Sam Ehlinger’s famous comments after winning the Sugar Bowl to cap the 2018 season.

After claiming that the Longhorns were “back,” Texas went 8-5 in 2019 and 7-3 in 2020. Mulkey does not want to have the same thing play out with her team at LSU.

“You’ll see these kids go win an exciting bowl game and they’ll go ‘we’re baaaack’ and then the next year they get their butts kicked,” she said.

Here are her full comments:

Mulkey has always been a firecracker with unmatched swagger across her sport, and all sports. She wears her emotions on her sleeve, does not mince words, and always has something worth listening to to say.

Taking a shot at the Longhorns, whether she meant it directly or not, is the stuff of legends. LSU women’s basketball is in great hands with Mulkey at the helm.

And, just as a reminder, Texas football is not back.
