Duke Football Player Who Slapped Athletic Trainer Swipes At A Field Staffer In New Video From Week Prior

Duke defensive back Kimari Robinson issued an apology for his behavior during the college football game on Saturday. However, a new video from the week prior appears to show the same player swipe at a member of the security team.

Neither the player nor the program has addressed the resurfaced footage from Georgia Tech as of this writing.

The exact details of this new college football video are not entirely clear. Regardless of what happened and how it went down, the optics are not great.

Kimari Robinson apologized for the athletic trainer incident.

I was watching the game between Duke and North Carolina as part of a quad box. My attention was on one of the other three boxes. My wife actually reacted first to the incident involving Kimari Robinson and an athletic trainer. She told me to rewind.

We watched the altercation back more than a few times. It appeared to be a giant misunderstanding that could’ve been avoided. Both parties could’ve acted differently. That does not excuse what happened!

Robinson went to check on an injured teammate as he laid motionless on the ground. A female athletic trainer ran onto the field and tried to move the player out of the way. She put her hand on his chest and gave him a forcible shove. He reacted by swatting her hand off of his chest in an aggressive manner.

The female staffer appeared to be Kaitlyn Underwood, who is listed as an ‘Athletic Training Fellow’ with Duke Athletics— where she provides medical coverage for the football team. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology with a concentration in Exercise Science and her Master of Science in Athletic Training from James Madison University. She is a Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC), Licensed Athletic Trainer (LAT), and an active member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA). Duke lists its ‘Athletic Training Fellow’ role as a “one-year, paid clinical and educational position.”

Underwood was visibly rattled by Robinson’s swipe. It appeared as though she understood the potential gravity of the moment. Robinson continued to stand over her for a moment before he eventually walked over to the sideline. Widespread backlash ensued.

As of this writing, Underwood has yet to address the incident. Robinson issued a statement of apology on Sunday night. Head football coach Manny Diaz has not announced a suspension. The university has not announced an additional punishment.

New video shows a Duke football player swipe at security.

Although Kamari Robinson apologized for what happened during the rivalry loss to North Carolina, he may not be out of the woods. A second video hit the timeline on Sunday after the incident from Saturday went viral on social media.

The second video was filmed prior to the college football game between Duke and Georgia Tech on Oct. 10. It was filmed after the initial pregame warmup period, sans uniform, at Bobby Dodd Stadium.

The Blue Devils were walking back to the locker room. A player got into a verbal altercation with a member of security (labeled as “field staff”) who stood near the tunnel. The player also made physical contact and swiped at the security guard.

I don’t know what triggered the spat. However, the Duke football player who shoved the “field staffer” wore the No. 5 on his shirt.

A second No. 5 walked by shortly thereafter.

There are two No. 5s listed on the roster. Wide receiver Javen Nicholas is one. Defensive back Kimari Robinson is the other.

Assuming that the player who swiped at the field staffer was wearing his jersey number on his shirt, it appears to be Robinson and not Nicholas. If it is in fact him, the video from Georgia Tech does not help to improve the optics from Saturday. There is a history.
