After Kyle Larson’s brutal 34th-place finish at Phoenix Raceway that seemingly put a dent in his 2026 NASCAR Cup Series championship hopes, the Hendrick Motorsports superstar wanted just one thing: An In-N-Out burger, protein style.

The fast-food comfort meal gave the California native a much-needed reminder of home as a long and, at times, difficult season wound toward an end.

When Larson showed up one week later at Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama, he didn’t need a reminder of home, because much of it was there with him.

Larson was joined at the track not only by his team, but also by his family. His wife Katelyn was there, as were their three children: Owen, Audrey, and Cooper.

As he prepared to strap into his race car for one of the most important and dangerous races of the year, Larson was surrounded by family, holding his son Cooper in his arms during the national anthem.

He then climbed into his car, put his belts on, and proceeded to have the most impressive restrictor plate race of his career.

Perhaps it’s sheer dumb luck. Perhaps it was fate. But everything seemed to go Larson’s way on Sunday, including a last-lap move from eighth place all the way to the lead to pick up a win that may well solidify his place as a three-time Cup Series champion, putting him in some impressive company.

When Larson pulled into victory lane following the race, he finished the day as he started it: surrounded by family. He climbed atop his car next to all three of his children, with Audrey waving the checkered flag over her head as confetti fell from the sky.

These are the moments that often go unseen at NASCAR races. We see drivers climbing out of their cars at the end of races displaying joy, anger, sadness, and everything in between.

But we rarely see the world around them. Larson’s triumph, with his family by his side, is just a small glimpse behind the curtain of one of the NASCAR world’s biggest stars.

Odds And Ends From Talladega Superspeedway

This was my first trip to Talladega, and it is everything that it claims to be and more.

Immediately as you pull up to the track, it’s hard not to be overwhelmed by the facility’s sheer size. Even compared to similarly sized tracks like Daytona, Indianapolis, and Pocono, Talladega feels absolutely immense.

The party scene on the famed Boulevard also lived up to the billing.

Walking around Sunday morning before the race, it felt like just about everyone was still in recovery mode even as late as 10 a.m. Slowly but surely, groups made their way out of their tents and campers and began to pull themselves together. But it was clear that a good time was had by all on Friday and Saturday night.

From a sheer track facilities standpoint, as well, Talladega was extremely impressive.

NASCAR spent $50 million to update the garage area in 2019, and it was money well spent. The new facilities are as nice and fan-friendly as you’ll see at any track in the country.

Fans love restrictor-plate races.

The six races a year at Daytona, Talladega, and Atlanta routinely sell out. But it’s easy to see why drivers and teams aren’t as enthusiastic. The garage area after the race looked like a junkyard, with beat-up race cars and parts and pieces strewn everywhere.

No other major sports league in the world gives its fans the level of access that NASCAR does.

Prior to the race, fans are spread throughout the garage and pit road areas. Drivers are often just walking around amongst them, and fans are even allowed onto the track for pre-race introductions. Imagine something like that at an NFL or NBA game? Never in a million years.

Go to a NASCAR race.

This isn’t me shilling. If you’ve ever been remotely curious about NASCAR racing, you have to go. The difference between the television and live experience is startling. I can’t tell you how many first-time fans I see at races who are blown away by how much they enjoy the experience. Get out to your nearest track. Go watch a race, and then let us know what you think about NASCAR racing.
