Kyrie Irving may be one of the most controversial players in the NBA. But, when he’s focused on playing basketball, there are few better. And, he reminded Lakers fans at Crypto.com Arena Wednesday night with a clutch shot to prevent an embarrassing Dallas Mavericks loss.

The Lakers trailed 91-71 heading into the fourth quarter, but a furious Los Angeles rally fueled by LeBron James put them in the lead, 101-99, after he drilled a go-ahead three-pointer.

But, James’ former Cavaliers’ teammate in Irving had quite the answer. He received a pass from Luka Doncic, and nailed a cold-blooded three to give the Mavericks the lead.

And, after this LeBron James turnover, where he curiously passed the ball despite having the much-smaller Irving on him, Kyrie knocked down two foul shots.

LeBron’s buzzer-beating three point shot missed, and the Mavericks held off the Lakers in a crucial early-season Western Conference matchup.

Kyrie finished with 28 points, while Luka chipped in 30. LeBron James had 26, but Anthony Davis had another clunker, with just ten points. That’s inexcusable from a player as good as he is. He’s simply been too inconsistent so far this season.
