Authorities have charged Lagerald Vick, a member of the 2018 Kansas Jayhawks’ Final Four team, with attempted first degree murder in Tennessee. Police also charged Vick with using a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony.

According to court records, Memphis Police Department officers took Vick, 29, into custody on Saturday and held him in the Shelby County Jail in Memphis, Tennessee. Vick, who played for the Kansas Jayhawks men’s basketball team from 2015-19, had bond set at $1.5 million.

The allegations against the former college basketball player stem from a shooting on July 5 that necessitated a police response and resulted in the victim being transported to Regional One Hospital.

According to an affidavit, the Memphis Police Department claims that Vick shot a man who was at a July 4 celebration in the 3100 block of Madewell Drive in Memphis, Tennessee. The victim claims in court documents that a man with a “handgun tucked under his armpit” approached him and started a verbal altercation. The victim informed authorities that he had tried to deescalate the situation, but when he turned away, the man shot him in the lower back. He later identified Lagerald Vick as the alleged shooter in a photo lineup.

Lagerald Vick had a previous arrest just three months ago

In April of this year, police took Lagerald Vick into custody on two felony charges and one misdemeanor charge. They charged him with misdemeanor vandalism, theft of property, and aggravated burglary. Those charges were related to Vick allegedly breaking into an ex-girlfriend’s house. Police accused him of stealing electronics and disabling the camera that was on the home’s porch.

During his freshman year at Kansas, he was accused of repeatedly hitting a female student in the arm and kicking her in the face. A Title IX inquiry determined that he had probably struck her numerous times.

Lagerald Vick played four seasons at Kansas, helping them to the Final Four in 2018. He declared for the NBA draft after that season, but withdrew his name and returned for his senior season. He averaged 14.1 points per game, while shooting 45.5% on three-pointers, but took a leave of absence and did not return for the season’s final eight games. In the 2019 NBA Draft, he went unselected.
