During last night’s play-in game between the Los Angeles Clippers and New Orleans Pelicans, LeBron James posted a tweet of support for the coach of one of those teams. The tweet revealed who LeBron believes is the best coach in the NBA.

That coach is Tyronn Lue and LeBron’s tweet probably couldn’t have been more poorly timed for the coach.

The tweet came after the Clippers had seemingly taken control of the game and seemingly secured the last Western Conference playoff spot. Unfortunately, they quickly crumbled after the tweet. The Pelicans turned around a 13 point second half deficit to beat the Clippers 105-101.

LeBron and Tyronn Lue have some history together. Lue’s first year as a head coach came when he replaced David Blatt as the head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers midway through the 2015-16 season. That season would end with the Cavs turning around a 3-1 deficit in the NBA Finals to win the title against the Golden State Warriors.

LeBron and Ty Lue would lead the Cavs to finals appearances in each of the next two seasons. That offseason saw LeBron lead the Cavs for the Lakers and Lue would be fired by the Cavs after an 0-6 start to the next season.

Since then, LeBron has gone on to win another title with the Lakers and Lue led the LA Clippers to last season’s Western Conference finals.

Tyronn Lue has achieved a lot in a very short career, but it’s just about impossible to consider him the best coach in the NBA right now. Gregg Popovich is the winningest coach in NBA history and has 5 rings. Steve Kerr has 3 rings.

Erik Spoelstra won a pair of rings with LeBron, has led the Heat back to the Finals without LeBron, and helped them claim the top seed in the East this season.

There is no denying that Tyronn Lue is a very good coach, there are just plenty of reasons to believe that there are a few who are more deserving of the title of best coach in the NBA.
