Legend High School football coach Jake Heaps has been suspended.
Jake Heaps will not be on the sidelines for Legend High School’s first two football games in 2026. The head coach has been suspended for recruiting and practice violations.
Heaps will also be barred from coaching in the postseason. The decision has the Titans‘ season off to a tumultuous start.
The team will now be forced to make a deep postseason run without help from its leader.
Who is Jake Heaps?
The former college quarterback played for three different programs between 2010 and 2014. He was viewed as a four-star recruit following a productive career at Skyline High School in Sammamish, Washington.
Heaps signed with BYU ahead of his freshman year. He appeared in 13 games while throwing for 2,316 yards and 15 scores. The Cougars went 7-6 that season. He then returned as a sophomore.
In 2011, Heaps threw for 1,452 yards in nine contests. He was benched after a 44-point loss to rival Utah but returned to the lineup after an injury to starter Riley Nelson.
After a 10-3 campaign, Heaps transferred to Kansas where he threw for 1,414 yards across 11 games. He had more interceptions than touchdowns and quickly left for Miami before his senior year.
Heaps lost an offseason QB battle to freshman Brad Kaaya, appearing in three games during his final year. He’d later spend some time in the NFL and CFL before trading football for a profession in media.
In 2022, he left his radio show to become Russell Wilson’s full-time quarterback coach. At the time, the passer was gearing up for a stint with the Denver Broncos.
Wilson left Denver in 2024. Heaps was hired to be the head coach at Legend High School in 2025. He took over for Monte Thelen, who led the Titans to the 5A state championship game the year prior. Heaps went 10-2 in his debut season.

Legend has developed into a local power in recent years. They’ve gone 65-19 over the last seven seasons.
Jake Heaps’ debut was a success on the field. Unfortunately, there were also negative headlines. The Titans were placed on probation last fall for impermissible recruiting contact. An assistant reached out to players outside Legend’s attendance zone. He used social media to invite prospects to attend practices or games.
Trouble bled into this offseason with a violation of CHSAA’s preseason practice rules. That infraction reportedly involved practicing in pads during a restricted period.

The combination of the two violations resulted in the two-game suspension. Legend, which expects to contend for a Colorado state championship, will not have its head coach for the first two games of the regular season or the playoffs.
The Titans will kick off on August 28th against Grandview.
