Pro Football Hall Of Famer And Packers Legend LeRoy Butler Says When Team Should Consider Benching Aaron Rodgers

Try as he might, four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers isn’t going to escape criticism for the Green Bay Packers’ awful 3-6 start to the season.

Surely, the Packers haven’t offered Rodgers much help. His wide receivers are a bunch of dudes you’ve probably never heard of and running back Aaron Jones is injured yet again. But Rodgers has been downright awful in his own right. The 10-time Pro Bowler is averaging just 232.2 yards per game, the least of his career as a starter. He’s thrown for only 14 touchdowns and seven interceptions and done everything he could to throw his teammates under the bus.

Ultimately, however, the buck stops with the guy being paid $50 million per year.

And while it may seem unfathomable that the Packers could ever bench someone with those accolades or making that kind of money, one Green Bay legend says that the time to bench Rodgers could come soon.

Leroy Butler spent his entire career as a member of the Green Bay Packers. The Packers selected Butler in the second round of the 1991 NFL Draft. The Florida State product went on to make four Pro Bowls and win Super Bowl 31.

Butler was recently enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a member of the 2022 class. He recently spoke to Maggie Gray and Andrew Perloff of CBS Sports Radio about Green Bay’s situation. Butler said he believes the time to bench Rodgers could come soon.

Butler said that if the Packers lose to the Cowboys, Titans and Eagles, then backup Jordan Love deserves a chance.

“After that point, if you’ve lost those games, you gotta get Jordan Love in there at some point,” he said. “Because there’s no playoffs.

Green Bay selected Love in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft out of Utah State. He’s since appeared in just seven NFL games, making one start in 2021. The Packers’ season is spiraling fast, and benching Rodgers would be a massive step to take. But it just may be the one they have to take.
