The Los Angeles Dodgers hosted a home playoff game against the Atlanta Braves on Saturday. The crowd at first pitch was pathetic.
Fans of the reigning World Series champions tried to blame the weather.
If your MLB team is playing in the NLDS at its home stadium on a Saturday, and tickets are affordable, you should be there in time for the first pitch. No excuses!
It is extremely hot in Los Angeles.
Before we get into attendance, we must first look at the thermometer. They typical average high temperature in Los Angeles on Oct. 3 typically hovers around 80º with a low of ~60º. It will be well above average this weekend. A dangerous heat wave pushed temperatures more 15 to 20 degrees above normal.
Downtown Los Angeles hit a record high of 102º on Friday. Chavez Ravine hit 105º on Saturday.
To try and counteract the heat, employees at Dodger Stadium handed out free waters at the entrance. Gatorade also set up a tent.

Fans tried to stay in the shade as long as possible before first pitch.
Many fans are staying in the shade under centerfield before first pitch today. It’s already 101 degrees at Dodger Stadium. pic.twitter.com/JaA4BZJqFt

Misting fans around the concourse provided some relief — but not much!

Hot is hot is hot. Los Angelenos are not accustomed to 100º+ temperatures in early October. It is uncomfortable. Nobody wants to bake in the sun for 3+ hours if they don’t have to.
That does not excuse the poor attendance! There are ways to beat the heat and support your team in person.
The Dodgers drew an awful crowd for a playoff game.
This was the scene at Dodger Stadium during the national anthem:
Notice the bleachers. Those seats should always be at capacity for a playoff game. Especially on a Saturday.
The non-bleacher seats were not any better. This is how it looked with less than 20 minutes until first pitch:

Here is a good look at the upper decks:

There were a lot of empty seats on the first base line in the bottom of the first inning.

This was the bottom of the third:
I normally wait until the bottom of the third inning to do more accurate crowd shots in L.A. with traffic and parking issues. Here’s Dodger Stadium in the bottom of the third inning of Game 1 of the NLDS with Shohei Ohtani getting ready to bat. It’s 102 degrees right now. pic.twitter.com/8YQucnurEf

Ticket prices were not egregious. Los Angelenos often arrive late to sporting events and concerts because of traffic. It was hot.
All of those things can be true. And yet, this is a playoff game on a Saturday. There is no excuse for the stadium not to be full!
