Surfer Shreds Panama’s Most Intimidating Wave During One Of The Best Swells In Years

Santa Cruz reopened the beaches to surfers this week which means we’ll soon have new surfing footage to keep us busy but this newly released clip was actually filmed back in January during one of the best swells to hit Panama’s Caribbean in the past year.

Bocas del Toro is an archipelago on the Caribbean Coast of Panama not too far from the Costa Rican border and it’s home to some spectacular waves. Panama‘s Pacific Coast fires all year long but when Bocas del Toro gets hit with the right conditions it’s home to a handful of world-class waves including Paunch and Bluff on the main island, Careneros on the island of the same name, and Silverbacks on Isla Bastimentos off of Red Frog Beach.

Surfer Luke Davis charged the most terrifying wave in all of Panama…Silverbacks…just off a beach I really wish I was sitting on right now. The last time I was there I caught a f’n boa constrictor with my bare hands as it was slithering through the rocks at the end of the beach near where all the poison dart frogs are.

Red Frog Beach is named for a specific type of poison dart frog that you can only find there. I mean, where the hell else in the world do you have THIS MANY things going on at the beach? It’s such a chill spot.

The beaches in my part of Florida are still shut down. The parking lots are blockaded by huge cement barriers and there’s really no end in sight to when we’ll be able to get back out there legally but it’s not like the waves will be firing this Summer without hurricanes. At least those are around the corner, right?
