The widespread acceptance of legal sports betting has been a welcome change for many fans who like to have the chance to get financially invested in the outcome of various competitions, but it hasn’t been without its downsides.

While there’s nothing wrong with throwing some money down on a contest to make things interesting, the same can’t be said for going out of your way to harass players who prevented you from cashing in.

Unfortunately, that hasn’t stopped disgruntled bettors from sliding into DMs to air their grievances and even tracking down players in person after their wager failed to hit. Now, it looks like we have yet another somewhat concerning case of Degenerates Behaving Poorly on our hands courtesy of what unfolded at the American Century Championship last weekend.

On Sunday, Steph Curry secured his first win at the ACC with the help of the walk-off eagle that gave him the win over former tennis player Mardy Fish on the 18th hole of their match.

However, his victory wasn’t without a little bit of controversy, as Fish was fighting an uphill battle after shanking his drive off of the tee thanks in no small part to a fan with a brazen disregard for golf etiquette who loudly yelled in his backswing.

Earlier this week, Fish appeared on The Ryen Rusillo Podcast and shed some light on what went down on the final hole while revealing the spectator in question likely went out of his way to distract him because he had money riding on Curry.

Fish recalled essentially getting the Happy Gilmore treatment from the heckler when he addressed his ball, saying:

“We get to 18 and there’s a guy, I’m just about to pull the club back, and this is before somebody yelled in my backswing, and he yells out, ‘Hey Fish, eff you, you suck,’ when no one is talking.

And there’s thousands of people there, and I’m just about to tee off and he says, ‘Hey Fish, eff you, you suck,’ right next to my wife and kids, and just out of nowhere. It’s just weird, right?…

Steph’s like, ‘Whoa dude. What are you doing?’ And my buddy who’s caddying for me was pretty pissed. So he’s got his eyeballs on this guy and probably going to say something after I hit.

So I reset. … I take the club back and right at the top of my backswing, it wasn’t at my downswing, it was right at the top, and he yells, I don’t know what he yelled, some sort of bird sound or something. He got me good. He really did…

He said he bet on Steph to win, so he wanted him to win.”

Fish also praised Curry for going out of his way to chastise the fan and said the Warriors star seemed affected by the guy’s actions to the point where he gave his opponent some encouragement before he stepped onto the green to sink the winning putt.

The fact that someone would care enough about a bet on a celebrity golf tournament to heckle a guy in the hopes of winning is pretty wild, but it’s kind of hard to be too shocked at this point.
