Austin Football Club opened its 2022 MLS season against Cincinnati over the last weekend in February and kicked things off in style. In front of a home crowd at the one-year-old Q2 Stadium, Austin went on to a 5-0 victory that started the year off on a high note.

Although the club is young, the support is significant. It was a sold-out crowd in ATX and they were going absolutely bonkers in the stands despite the semi-chilly temperatures as the sun fell behind the clouds as the game went on.

Part of their energy may have stemmed from a very special visitor prior to the match. Matthew McConaughey, a part-owner of the club, is also the team’s Minister of Culture. His job is to get the people going before, during and after the game.

Last year, before the inaugural home opener for Austin, McConaughey rolled up in a green suit with a bongo drum. He had the stadium going crazy.

This year, McConaughey left the green suit at home but made sure to swing by the supporter section to get their hearts pumping before the match. Literally.

To do so, he led the fans in the ‘Money Chant’ from Wolf of Wall Street.

During warmups, McConaughey stood in front of the supporters, beat his chest, and had them hum right along with him.

With the drummers involved and the full voice of the supporters, it was absolutely exhilarating.

McConaughey was absolutely loving it right along with them.

With a final result of 5-0, it couldn’t have gone any better.
