USMNT boss Mauricio Pochettino is set to sign a four-year extension

United States men’s national team manager Mauricio Pochettino is on the verge of signing a contract extension with US Soccer, according to reports. Pochettino’s previous contract with the national team expired at the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup.

According to reports, a new four-year contract extension for Mauricio Pochettino is “close.” Poch’s new contract would keep him in charge through the 2030 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco — in addition to the first three matches of the tournament being played in Uruguay (Montevideo), Argentina (Buenos Aires), and Paraguay (Asunción) to mark the 100-year anniversary of the first World Cup.

Telemundo broadcaster Andrés Cantor first reported the extension was close to being done on Tuesday night, with The Athletic’s David Ornstein subsequently confirming the deal’s progress on Wednesday.

Pochettino’s initial contract ran through the 2026 World Cup, with both parties expressing interest in continuing the partnership before the tournament began.

“Right now, it’s about resting a little bit, to think, have conversations with the federation to see what the decision is. I’m so happy — we’ve built a very good relationship,” Pochettino said during the postgame press conference after the US’s loss to Belgium in the Round of 16.

“From a men’s national team coaching standpoint, we’re in active discussions with Mauricio and staff about the future. We all share a belief that the best days of U.S. Soccer are ahead of us,” US Soccer CEO JT Batson said earlier this month.

Although the Round of 16 exit to Belgium was disappointing, under Pochettino, the USMNT delivered its best World Cup group stage performance in program history — winning the group after just two matches for the first time. The USMNT’s 4-1 win over Paraguay in its first match also ranks among the program’s single greatest World Cup performances.

The US also won its first knockout stage World Cup game since 2002 by defeating Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32. Poch and his team’s style of play also seemed to connect with casual American soccer fans who were tuning into the World Cup, perhaps for the first time.

The next major matches for the USMNT will be the CONCACAF Nations League quarterfinals in November 2026, followed by the 2027 CONCACAF Gold Cup next summer, which the US will be favored to win alongside Mexico.
